One word can have a lot of power. It could be the the word that decides our fate when we are at a crossroads. More importantly, it could be a word you wished you hadn’t said.
Last week I sent out a flurry of applications for jobs and internships; I had just revised my resume and was feeling confident. Today, I looked over the resumes I sent out and found a typo. One extra word that I wish I could take back.
I know I won’t be hearing back from those 20 companies. -
Winter quarter starts tomorrow (well, today) and for once I can say that I am not looking forward to it with the same great pep that I felt starting any of my previous terms.
Everything has seemed very routine lately but things are starting to change around me at work, home and college. My roommate and my coworker have both discussed how they want to change for the sake of change. The refreshing sensation that comes with something different. Every quarter I hope for something around me to improve and regardless of how much I try, I always fail. But now I’m terrified as I look down this double barrel of change.
At work, about a half dozen of my peers are leaving or moving to a different shift (better jobs). I am too. I get the pleasure of working a graveyard shift forty hours a week. Oh I still have school; I guess sometimes change is unavoidable.
Indoor soccer is starting up. Maybe I’ll finally score a goal. There’s change I can count on.

My 21st was amazing. People I know made it that way.
Personal Thank you’s to:
V for that surprise cake at work and for dinner :)
Roomie for being there when I bought my first booze and for having that margarita that would have made me pass out.
Antenna for setting up my first of several celebrations, which was also my first trip to the bars.
Coffee for letting me crash at your place (and for the tie). Although, no thanks for having me drive you to the airport at 5am…a morning after I got drunk.
Terry for the invite to the bar. Sorry, that’s a huge cover. Next time.
Vampire for driving and for buying me two heavy duty drinks. Next time I won’t gulp down my AMF.
Jimi for keeping me grounded at the party and for tanking for me.
Beard for buying me my first drink and for your continuous expert advice and caustic remarks.
Vikings! for the invite to the party. I really wanted an axe though :(
Arwen for dancing and singing with me all night. Sorry about your cloak and yes you do have dry heels.
Arwen’s friends for trying to help me out, even though you cuffed me to the wrong girl.
Deputy for ruining my fun by not letting me go…green.
Pedicab rider for getting me part of the way home. I had to walk the rest of the way and was followed by some guy dragging his feet. It was dark and 3am. I tipped you well. I take back the thanks.
DTL for tomorrow. Well, technically today.
Truth-speaker and Early-bird for the baked goods I will be getting on Monday.
Captain Sunshine for my first run to the bars after work next weekend.
Yes, I am giving thanks in advance.
Biggest thanks go to my parents though. If I wasn’t worried about how you’d react to me going overboard and blacking out…I’d probably have an eyebrow shaved off by now.
Now about those two midterms this week…

So I’ll have twelve-hour Wednesdays for the next five weeks…but that’s okay because I start them off with tennis and end them with soccer.
I wake up groggy and sluggish, but then hit some balls around and get the blood flowing for the busy day. With a few staggered breaks (usually spared for homework and lab-work) I zombie my way through hours of lectures. Slowly losing my energy.
I stagger out of lab at 9 with all of my energy reserves exhausted and lumber to the soccer fields.
Moments later my pants come off, and I stand there in my short soccer shorts yelling out a blood-curling cry “My Dixie Wrecked.”
The game starts and I feel ready to conquer the world…at least until I realize that I haven’t stretched or warmed up and consequently have to sub-out two minutes later.
I almost scored a goal today. Six inches too high. But we didn’t need it because the team played great and we won 3-0!

Pamukkale, Turkey
Cotton Castle, Pamukkale’s translated name, is a wildly popular tourist site. Seventeen hot-water springs in the area spill out water in temperatures ranging from 95 degrees to 212 degrees, which contains a high concentration of calcium bicarbonate. The water flows off a cliff, cools and hardens into calcium deposits that form terraces, as white as cotton and bright enough to be easily seen from the town of Denizli, which is on the opposite side of the valley, 12 miles away. These terraces, which continue to grow, hold pools of water.
